2019 End of Year Book Survey.

I don’t think you know how many renditions of this post was typed out and discarded before getting *this*, the post you’re looking at now.

This year kind of sucked reading wise. And not in the sense of these books were terriblebut these books were mediocre.

I can list on one hand the amount of books that made my favorites list… obviously a lot shorter than last years list.

And I can’t make an entire blog post around five books. That’d end up with me rambling to create content.
The annual end of year survey was created by The Perpetual Page-Turner!

Best in Books:

Best Book You Read In 2019?

Middlegame  by Seanan McGuire *cries a million tears*

Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

Gideon the Ninth. I started this book in September (?) and I’m still only a quarter into it? A.K.A I still haven’t finished it.

Don’t really know when or if I’m going to finish it…… oh well.

Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)?

I’m not really a “pusher” of books, though I got a few people to read Lets Talk About Love.

But I was also pushing this book last year…. either way, ya girl is proud of that.

By the way, read Lets Talk About Love thanks.

Best series you started in 2019? Best Sequel of 2019? Best Series Ender of 2019?

Series started: The Line Between by Tosca Lee {review}
Sequel: Only Ashes Remain by Rebecca Shaeffer {review}
Series ender: The Shadowglass by Rin Chupeco {review}

Favorite new author you discovered in 2019?

Kristina Forest because she gave me the black romcom, roadtrip book I deserved this year.

Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year

The Gilded Wolves was an emotional rollercoaster that has me nervous to read the sequel.

But, we cry in this household, so I have a while to prepare.

Book You Read In 2019 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?

Get a Life, Chloe Brown, which ironically I read on Christmas and gave five stars…

Keep in mind, this is my first romance five star read ever. We’re making history over here.

Expect a review sometime in the future.

Favorite cover of a book you read in 2019?

The Storm Crow was kind of mediocre for me, but that cover???

I think I gave it three stars, honestly, but this was a complete cover read for me.

Most memorable character of 2019?

We remember Severin because my poor boy needs a nap.

He also made me cry and is my type™ so here we are.

Most beautifully written book read in 2019?

I might have to say The Night Circus to be honest.

(keep in mind this year was not great™ when it came to reads and I’d been holding off on this one for the longest).

Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2019?

Aphrodite Made Me Do It; for someone who hasn’t read much poetry, this one touched my heart.

Hell, my sister read a few pages and almost stole it from me and we almost had a fight to the death.

(I would have won btw).

(Just sayin’).

Book you can’t believe you waited until 2019 to finally read?

The Cruel Prince, not because it was amazing, but because I thought it was going to be a 10 out of 10 favorite book of the year kind of thing and I procrastinated stupid hard.

It’s not as disappointing as some books cough cough Obsidio, but again, my expectations were a bit too unrealistic.

Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2019?

We might have to skip this one, because ya girl doesn’t… remember them by heart…

Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2019?

Shortest: Sparrowhawk – 28 pgs
Longest: Obsidio – 615 pgs

Both mediocre, one super disappointing.

Book That Shocked You The Most

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed The Flatshare. Because if I’m honest… didn’t go into it with the highest expectations.

I can see myself rereading it and honestly enjoy it just as much as the first time.

(I’m also okay with the minimalist cover).

OTP OF THE YEAR (you will go down with this ship!)
Tea and Kalen have made my very limited and exclusive OTP list because I LOVE THEM. TOO MUCH.

Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year
Loray and Casiopia from Gods of Jade and Shadow, because we love a chaotic demon and a badass heroine duo.

Favorite Book You Read in 2019 From An Author You’ve Read Previously

The Bone Houses by Emily Lloyd-Jones…

It was already a no-brainer since I declared The Hearts We Sold an absolute favorite…

I’ve already given her a spot on my favorite authors list at this point.

Best Book You Read In 2019 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure:

Instagram made me read A Curse so dark and Lonely.

That and the fact that it’s a Beauty and the Beast retelling, something I’m always here.

Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2019?
Red from Get a Life Chloe Brown, because PRICKLY NICE GUYS ALWAYS WIN THANKS.

Best 2019 debut you read?

I hadn’t read too many debuts this year sadly, again, very shit year.

However, The Tiger at Midnight was great from the cold dead romance part in my heart… cinnamon roll love interest for the win ALWAYS AND FOREVER, I WILL KEEP REPEATING THIS.

Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year?

Wilder Girls was quite vivid, it wasn’t my favorite read I gave it three stars, but the writing was nice.

Didn’t realize creepy, boarding schools on an abandoned island would be my thing….. huh.

Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read?

Truly Madly Royally is the first thing that comes to mind, it was short, cute, low drama and funny.

Happy black girls thriving, give me this.

Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2018?

Only one book truly made me cry my eyes out and it was Middlegame. But sibling relationships > romantic relationships ANYTIME.

Hidden Gem Of The Year?

Imma need ya’ll ot start talking about When the Sky Fell on Splendor alright??

Stranger Things meets X-Files/E.T…. I think.

Book That Crushed Your Soul?
… Middlegame okay?

Most Unique Book You Read In 2018?

Beyond the Black Door had such an interesting premise… but I am biased when anything related to souls is involved sooooooooooo.

That and a-spec representation. 10/10 thanks.

Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)?

I absolutely DESPISE Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey. I hate it and that’s that.

I’m not going to go into it too much, I did DNF it a third of the way, but I just…. wow. Been a while since I’ve hated a book so.

I recommend Whitney’s review for a perfect summation of my feelings.

Blogging/Bookish Life:

Best review you’ve written in 2019?

I feel so repetitive.

Best discussion/non-review post you had on your blog?
My Halloween post comparing books to candy ft. the sister.

Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)?
I was a true hermit this year… I did NOTHING.

Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2019?
Getting whitelisted by Macmillan on Edelweiss! …for two seconds.

Truly unexpected.

Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year?
This year kind of became shit staring in around May in my personal life? Despite all of the reading I’d done, I’d still consider it a reading slump because I had no motivation to blog/read. Which in turn made me SUPER behind in ARC’s :/

Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)?
I…. I’m going to skip this one, because I actually don’t know how to find that information.

Best bookish discovery?
I’m getting more into romance???? Surprisingly??

Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year?
Of course! I have an entire post on it.

Looking Ahead:

One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2019 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2020?

With the Fire on High definitely… So upset that I just haven’t had the guts to get to it.

After The Poet X, I wasn’t ready to cryBut, I’m planing for a read early 2020. Send good vibes and support.

Review: The Poet X

Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2020 (non-debut)?

Wayward Witch by Zoraida Cordova… I GOT AN ARC!

AND I’M SUPER EXCITED. I absolutely adored Bruja Born and am so excited for the finale.

Reviews: Labyrinth Lost; Bruja Born

2020 Debut You Are Most Anticipating?

Star Daughter by Shveta Thakrar… THE DAUGHTER OF A STAR AND A HUMAN.

This may be my most anticipated read of 2020… I’m declaring it now.

Series Ending/A Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2019?

The Silvered Serpents… I’ve explained enough up there, I’m trying to limit the repetitiveness.

But honestly, I have a feeling I’ll cry and Roshani will take my heart and at this point it’s hers.

Review: The Gilded Wolves

A 2020 Release You’ve Already Read & Recommend To Everyone:
Again, stupid reading slump, so I don’t have anything.

🎵 Really long post but it’s okay because end of year stuffff 🎵 It is the last day of the year, so tell me: do you celebrate New Years? I personally don’t, it’s kind of just another day for me, but I want to know! Or, what’s your last book of 2019? Was it good? Let me know!

  1. I will read Let’s Talk About Love this year. I WILL! So glad to see Only Ashes Remain on your list. I just got that one and am eager to get to it. I loved Truly Madly Royally and am disappointed it hasn’t gotten more hype. I think you are really going to enjoy With the Fire on High. The Poet X killed me too, but this one holds a different kind of space in my heart. I’ve read Silvered Serpents. Yes, you are in fact going to cry. Wishing you the best in 2020 and Happy New Year!
