Spooky TBR for someone who doesn’t read spooky books

I’ve been looking at other peoples scary TBR’s and… they make me look like a wimp. BUT IT’S NOT MY FAULT… I just don’t gravitate towards the genre as a whole.

I mention how my brain tends to self censor itself and the fact that I find issues with the horror genre in the form of technicality, characters, etc…

And I’ve been trying to branch out, so I bought (and checked out) a few books that are branded as creepy, if not uncomfortable reads.

As these TBR’s go, excluding ARC’s and the occasional book here and there, this month is dedicated to all the witchy, spooky, maybe bloody reads 🙂 .

Review: The Diviners by Libba Bray; Everlost & Everwild by Neal Shusterman

Lair of Dreams – Libba Bray || I read the first one during Tome Topple and while I wanted to binge the rest of the series, these are some big puppies. I was exhausted.

Everfound – Neal Shusterman || Been on my shelf for too long and it’s the final book in the series… so here we are.

Unwind – Neal Shusterman || I have the entire series, but I don’t want to burn myself out by binging the entire thing. I do want to finally get into these, but I bought the entire thing used (they were really cheap… saved a lot), I looked into the first one and a few pages are damaged… and not petty damaged, but some spots on multiple pages are maybe unreadable… so I may substitute this one for another.

The Girl From the Well – Rin Chupeco || We all know how much I love her Bone Witch series, so the library hooked me up.

Review: Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire; Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

Hunting Prince Dracula – Kerri Maniscalco || Won’t even lie… I’m here for the romance *shrugs* And it doesn’t hurt that there’s blood involved (wow I sound scary I swear I’m nice) *shrugs*

Down Among the Sticks and Bones – Seanan McGuire || I have the audiobook and I adored Jack in the first book… but audiobooks as a whole are intimidating as hell sooooooooooooooooo

Not Even Bones – Rebecca Schaeffer || I mean… there’s blood on the cover… ISSA VIBE.

An Unkindness of Magic – Kat Howard || Magical witches that deals with a lot of dark topics (and it’s been on my shelf for too long whats new).

I guess this turned into a series catching up… kind of TBR… Look, I know I’m failing— this was kind of hard, I don’t spook easy, but anything that gives off a vibe is going to be an okay for this TBR 😉 .

  1. I love everything about this post as I too am sort of a Wimp with regards to the spooky genre 😂Lair of Dreams is also on my TBR for this October. These all look like great picks, Not Even Bones appeals to me cause of the comparisons to Dexter which I LOVED. I hope you enjoy these, wishing you a wonderful Spooktober 🍂🍁☺️ 🍂🍁

  2. Ooooh you have some great spooky reads on your TBR. Lair of Dreams was an interesting follow-up to The Diviners and I just finished it up. I really liked how Bray expanded with a few characters that were just briefly mentioned in the first one, so I hope you enjoy. Hunting Prince Dracula had such an amazing atmosphere, and the romance was pretty brilliant. And hope you enjoy the rest of the reads! Great post! 🙂

    1. Thank you ❤ With the lack of a release date for the fourth book, I've been kind of procrastinating with The Diviners just so I don't suffer with waiting T_T

I've been nervous to get caught up with the series with all the mixed reviews of Escaping from Houdini, but I have no doubt this one will soothe my cold, dead heart XD

      1. Oh gosh, I hadn’t realized there was a lack of a release date. D: Maybe I should hold off on the third one for a bit, though. But once you’ere in it, it’s kind of hard to stop, lol.

Oh gosh, yes. There was a lot of mixed feelings for me personally with it, but Hunting Prince Dracula was my favorite of the series so far. It’s so perfect for October, too! I really hope you enjoy, though! 🙂

  3. I freaking ADORE spooky books. The Girl From the Well’s one of my all-time favorite reads. The gore and the creep-factor were so on point. Another horror author I love is definitely Kendare Blake. Her Anna Dressed in Blood duology? Creepy and romantic at the same time. ♥

  4. Oh I love this list! I’m someone who gets scared pretty easily so I can’t read horror but I do love some creepy books! The Wayward Children series is so amazing, I loved Down Among the Sticks and Bones even more than Every Heart of Doorway 😀
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is one of my favourite creepy trilogies so I’d recommend that one! I also just got Kiersten White’s new book, The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein, and it looks like the perfect halloween read!

  5. Totally with you, I’m not a scary book person. I love your list though! I’m still trying to bring myself to read Small Spaces as my Halloween read. If kids can read it, I should be able to too. So hard to break out of my typical genre bubble!
